Sexting the new flirting
What is sexting?
Sexting is a relatively new term that came into play with development of communication technologies such as internet and mobile phones. To make it clear, sexting is when people exchange intimate or sexually explicit text messages, sometimes with images. This term was introduced with growing popularity of mobile phones in early 21st century.
Since then several social studies have been conducted on the matter. Some of them showed that, unsurprisingly, sexting was most popular among flirting teenagers and young adults (20-26 years old). In the meantime, other surveys have set their goal to answer a simple question: who is more prone to sexting men or women?
Social Studies
According to a recent study by a sociology professor Diane Kholos Wysocki at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, supported by Cheryl Childers, a sociology professor at Washburn University, women include sexually explicit content into their messages more often than men. About 65% of surveyed women sent such messages, while only around 45% of men admitted to do so. Dr. Kholos Wysocki has been conducting studies on sex over the internet since 1992, back when nobody even heard about broadband internet access or Wi-Fi; dial-up was the doorway to the Web. She says, that “Sexting is very much on the rise, especially among married couples.” Dr. Kholos Wysocki’s study used data from a survey of 5,187 adults who use various online services for married men and women, as its basis for analysis. It was conducted in 2009 and asked the respondents 68 questions about their internet use, demographics and sexual behaviors.
The study also showed that women were more likely to meet a person they met online in real life (83% of women compared to 67% of men). At the same time they were less worried about being caught looking at some sexual content and less wary than men about cleaning up their browsing history. From her personal experience, Dr. Kholos Wysocki stated: “I know young men who are constantly getting naked pictures from girls they know.”
However this study is not without limitations. Surveying exclusively online users will never give the complete picture, unlike, for example, a national poll or a community stud. This is simply because people who participated in this survey are different from the general population.
In addition, people who participated in the study voluntarily answered the questions provided in the survey. And in such manner they differ from the people who visit websites but do not wish to or do not have time to participate in a survey. This is called self-selection and makes conclusions based on the results of the survey somewhat unreliable in regards to general population. Nevertheless, this study offers a good insight into online sexting and flirting. Clearly it is widely spread and became a part of online dating. This can be explained by the fact that people feel a lot more comfortable and safe because of anonymity the Internet provides to its users.
Also according to the results, respondents expressed more interest in finding a real-life partner rather than virtual relationships. All these facts give room for much thought regarding online dating behavior.
