Moscow became the capital of Russia when Peter the Great builded St. Petersburg. By the invation of Napoleon in 1812, the people burned Moscow and evacuated. Napoleaon's forces approached by September 14. , they were cold, plagued by hunger and poor supply lines. Napolean was forced to retreat.
By January 1905 the institution of City Governor was introduced in Moscow. Alexander Adianov became Moscow's first official mayor. After the Russian revolution in 1917, Lenin, in fear of foreign attacks, moved the capital back from St. Petersburg to Moscow (March 5, 1918)
